mud defense Yesterday I was getting increasingly nervous about my ability to get up out of the previous campsite back to the forest road after it rained. The forest road (FR 88) itself was fairly hard packed, so even though it was rutted in places from prior rains I figured I could always get downContinue reading “site move / snood / daily cardio”

ELP –> Socorro, NM –> Chamizal, NM
2nd shot I got the 2nd Moderna vaccine shot 9am Monday at the main VA hospital in ELP. I didn’t know if I’d have a reaction, so I wanted to start moving to slightly cooler temps in advance. The move wouldn’t have been so time-sensitive but I broke my swamp cooler by inattention. I hadContinue reading “ELP –> Socorro, NM –> Chamizal, NM”
in transit: Capitan/Jaggers, Ruidoso, Alamagordo
The day before our 14d stay at Cave Campground in the Fort Stanton / Snowy River Cave national conservation area was up we got a friendly visit from the camp host from the nearby Jaggers free-day/paid -overnight campsite. He reminded me my time was almost up, and I said I knew and had it markedContinue reading “in transit: Capitan/Jaggers, Ruidoso, Alamagordo”
relo to Capitan, NM
It was staying in the mid-80s in the Las Cruces / ELP area, and was predicted to get into the 90s. It’s comfortable enough in the 80s with the cooler running but I like to get outdoors and hike with Muffin. A look at forecasts and freecampsites showed a developed BLM campground outside Capitan. ThisContinue reading “relo to Capitan, NM”
Organ Mountains NM / pizza experiment
I got my immediate business done in ELP and withdrew to the Organ Mountains national monument north of Las Cruces, NM. They’ve made some changes since I was last here, putting up a barrier on the north side of this trail. Land recovery, one supposes: This cuts the available spots in half (south of two-trackContinue reading “Organ Mountains NM / pizza experiment”
snowbird intermission
My usual snowbird pattern is to stay follow 70-75deg F weather moving in shortest-practical distances at 14-day intervals. I haven’t updated recently because I’ve deviated from that approach and am migrating toward north central New Mexico with a new friend. We have a few more days to wander that direction and then will stay inContinue reading “snowbird intermission”
kangaroo rat
When I was at the Organ Mountain[s] national monument I had the sliding door open after dark. The interior light was throwing a bit of illumination on the ground. One of these guys went scampering by. Looked like a gerbil with a longer tail curved up and ending in a black tuft. If they hopContinue reading “kangaroo rat”
coyote gourd
At Brayard near the materials testing station was a wild melon-y looking thing.
Gila national forest
Spent the long weekend on a trip to the Gila NF. There are cliff dwellings up there I wanted to see.
More from Lincoln NF
The trails were quite rocky. I might need boots with a stiffer sole to keep my feet from getting sore. Was trying to get a pic of done moss rose (?) and accidentally included some scat. Some kind of goat?
